What is Meyge Syndrome?

Meige syndrome is a neurological disorder that is caused by involuntary muscle movement. This disorder usually affects eyes, face, and lower jaw. These muscle contractions are forceful, and many people will experience pain.

What Are The Symptoms of Meige Syndrome?

1. Blepharospasm

This term is used to mean frequent blinking that is caused by forceful eyelid closure. This is the most common sign that many people will experience when they have this neurological disorder. The problem may start with one eye first and then move to the other one with time.

Under normal conditions, you may not experience this as it mostly happens with the response to fatigue, bright lights, tension, and air or wind pollution.

Over time the closure may be so frequent that it becomes hard to keep your eyes open. The patient may end up being blind not because their vision is affected, but because eyelids are closed. The best way to prevent this is by going for early medical attention so that to prevent the effects from becoming more severe.

Dry eyes may also signify Meige syndrome. Other factors may make your eyes dry, and the only way to be sure is by consulting a doctor. Don’t make any conclusion on your own.

2. Oromandibular dystonia

Oromandibular dystonia is the involuntary contraction of the tongue and jaw. This will make it hard to open or close your mouth. The effects are the same as those of Blepharospasm, and they will be severe with time. In the beginning, you may not notice it as it will occur rarely.

However, as time goes, the contractions will be severe and more frequent, making it hard even to eat. Oromandibular dystonia may also cause teeth grinding, pain in the jaw, frowning, headaches, displaced jaw, facial grimacing, thrusting of the chin, and clenched mouth.

Also, some people may experience problems in breathing when there are spasms in the respiratory tract. However, these cases are very minimal.

What causes Meige Syndrome?

The actual causes of this syndrome are not known. However, researchers suggest that the disorder might be caused by some environmental and genetic functions. The latest research has also shown that there might be a relationship between this syndrome and the basal ganglia a part of the brain that controls and organizes learning functionalities.

Oromandibular dystonia may be caused by other diseases such as Parkinson disease, Wilson disease, and tardive dyskinesia.

How To Treat This Neurologigal Desease

This syndrome is treated by injecting some drugs around the eyes and the jaw. Botulinum toxin is used in many cases as it will paralyze those muscles and protect the patient from involuntary spasms. The treatment is regular, and it should be administered after every three months.
